Information on bilirubin Bilirubin is a waste product that is created in the human body as a result of the breakdown of hemoglobin. It is brownish yellow and is found in bile. Although it is a waste product, bilirubin is thought to be beneficial up to a certain level, by protecting tissues from damage caused by free radicals. Beyond a point however, elevated levels of bilirubin can be toxic and are usually an indication of disease.
Is there any particular reason why you have tested your bilirubin levels? High bilirubin levels may be an indication of several disorders, including hemolysis, liver failure or cirrhosis, hepatitis, jaundice, or simply the result of drugs that you may have been prescribed. Bilirubin tests are most commonly performed in order to screen for liver disorders, after having observed other symptoms. It is not really possible to determine the cause behind a high bilirubin level or to prescribe any treatment based on only a bilirubin test. Moreover, it is not even possible to tell whether your bilirubin level is normal or elevated without knowing your age, gender, the test method, and a number of other factors. You should ask your family doctor to examine your test results and determine whether they are normal or you require treatment.
