Sore throat treatment

A sore throat may accompany a cold and cough or it might just be due to too much speaking/shouting, or even a mild throat infection. If it is in the initial stages and not accompanied by other symptoms you could treat it on your own.

Gargling, that age-old remedy suggested by our grandmothers is still among the most effectives cures for a sore throat.

A little salt, about half a teaspoon, in a cup of warm water is the most common gargle used. This solution can be used every hour for gargling and will provide some relief from the pain and soreness. In addition try some light infusions and herbal teas which will keep your throat soothed and yet not cause other problems. The easiest drink is to mix some lemon and honey in a cup of hot water. This can be drunk up to about five times a day and can even be drunk as a preventive, on a regular basis, throughout the day.

You should also avoid milk based drinks for a while, and avoid cool/cold food and drink. Make sure you keep your throat well protected against cold winds and draughts and try not to strain your throat more, by speaking too much, shouting etc.
