Head lice natural remedies Pregnant or nursing women, as well as children under the age of two, should avoid using delousing medication that is bought over the counter, as these can sometimes contain strong and harmful chemicals. Most home remedies are relatively safe, and some are more effective too, due to the complex combinations of substances in them.
If you do use a delousing shampoo, try to use a herbal one, and even in this case you should check with your doctor first. Leave the shampoo in your hair for at least five minutes to ensure that it penetrates the nits (eggs). If not, only the lice will be killed, and the eggs will later hatch. You can also use a simple home made concoction of vinegar and water to kill the lice and nits, as well as wash them off your hair. Any mixture that is thick enough to cut of the air supply to the lice for a long enough period will also help — hence home remedies such as mayonnaise, petroleum jelly, and olive oil are sometimes recommended. However, these can be quite messy, so try them only if the others don’t work. In addition, you should wash all clothes with hot water and mild disinfectant.
