(28 Jan 2008)

Anemia is basically a condition in which the red blood cells present in our blood are below the normal count. In plain language it would mean a deficiency in hemoglobin levels in the blood. Younger women have a 50% higher chance of experiencing it as compared to men as a result of menstrual bleeding.

It is also common to see anemia in older people due to them having more medical ailments. Blood is made up of two parts: plasma and cellular structure. The cellular structure can be further divided into a number of other particles of which the most important are red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. The red blood cells are extremely important and help in transporting oxygen from the lungs to the other parts of the body. The easiest way to define anemia is to call it a condition where the number of red blood cells in the blood is low. A number of factors can cause anemia. Practically any disruption in the normal life span of a red blood cell, or its creation in the bone marrow can lead to anemia. The normal life span of a red blood cell is 120 days. Other causes can be attributed to a lack of vitamin B12, usually seen in people whose intestines are not able to absorb this vitamin from their food or fluid intake – most likely vegetarians or alcoholics; loss of a large amount of blood; diseases of the bone marrow, as this is the location of red blood cell creation as well as reactions to certain medications and the onset of the AIDS virus.

Anemia can make you feel extremely weak and lethargic. A person with the condition may also experience shortness of breath, light headedness, palpitations of the heart and they may also turn surprisingly pale. More severe cases of anemia will also show symptoms like dizziness or fainting, rapid heart rate, angina or even a heart attack. Due to the seriousness that it can eventually develop into, the best way to tackle the condition is to prevent it and change your diet to a healthy one. Eating a diet rich in cereal, pastas, dairy products, poultry and fish, eggs and nuts have been very beneficial as they are abundant in protein. Also make sure you have a lot of iron intake with your food. Ingredients like oysters, bran flake, lentils, raisins and prunes will go a long way in giving you the iron content that your body requires. Stay away from coffee, tea and antacids as much as possible as they reduce the iron absorption capabilities of your body.

Anemia symptoms

Anaemia is a condition where the body experiences a deficiency of red blood cells or Haemoglobin. That is, the body either does not produce enough of the red blood cells, or destroys too many of them. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the   tissues and when their number is reduced, the amount of oxygen that reaches the tissues goes down too. This lack of blood affects the body in a variety of ways.

The most common reasons for Anaemia are pregnancy, malnutrition, vitamin deficiency, loss of blood due to surgery or injury, drug abuse. Symptoms of Anaemia are often ignored by people since they are very general in nature. Most people suffering from Anaemia complain of frequent tiredness, an inability to concentrate and in extreme cases, of shortness of breath and palpitations of the heart. Among children long term Anaemia can result in bad scholastic performances, behavioural disturbances and sometimes even affects neurological development in very small children.

One of the easiest ways of identifying an Anaemic is to by the pallor of the skin. A blood test is an effective way of determining whether a person is anaemic or not. One of the most common types of anaemia is the iron deficiency anaemia. Home remedies for anaemia such as balanced, healthy diet is an effective way of combating anaemia. Eat food that is rich in iron. Make lean meat an integral part of your diet. Include leafy vegetables, dates, frequent glasses of Orange juice in your daily intake.
