Weight loss tips for a child

Need advice to help my overweight child loose weight?
(28 Jan 2008)

For children to work towards losing weight, the best thing is to get them outside the house! A lot of children are faced with the problem of obesity because of a tendency to always spend time sitting in front of the television or the computer. This is a vicious habit that needs to be broken.

Once sitting in front of a screen, you will notice that children also tend to munch as they are simply watching. In order to cut these habits, it is wiser instead to get them out. This not only encourages a child to move about and indulge in some much needed exercise, it will also get the child out of the disastrous habit of munching. If there is no place to go, you could simply go for a walk, or to a mall or superstore. There is plenty of space in such places and it will enable the child to always be interested in walking around. If possible, of course, a playground with a few swings and rides for the kids is always the best place a child would want to be. The added possibility of making new friends in such places can also make it more attractive.

The second thing to do is attack the munching habit, if your child has one. You should always encourage your child to eat more of fruits as opposed to candy and chocolates. Even during meal times, there should be more of protein rather than fatty foods in the diet. For example, it is a better idea to eat grilled chicken than fried chicken. Such simple and small changes will help to reduce weight quite a lot. You should also cut back on snacking, especially if it involves foods such as chips and aerated drinks. These are the commonest snacks available and they usually cause the most harm. You should make it a point to check the levels of sodium intake of your child as well. Sodium intake leads to water retention, which means greater weight gain across time. Also, instead of taking in aerated drinks or even fruit juices, you should encourage your children to have more of water. It is always more advisable to eat fruit than to drink the juice, because juice also contains added sugar most of the time. Once you manage to make such small changes to your child’s general day to day activities, the difference will be visible fairly quickly.

Helping Your Child with Weight Loss

It is estimated that thousands of children carry unnecessary weight. Children today are largely sedentary and do not get the proper exercise they need each day. Couple that with busy lifestyles and a constant diet of fast food, and you have an overweight child. When you know that your child needs to lose weight, you need to walk a fine line. You do not want to damage your child’s self esteem by making him or her feel “fat”, yet you want to teach them the proper way to eat and exercise.

One of the first things you need to do to help your child lose weight is to take a look at their diet. You have a lot of control in what they eat. You buy the groceries so clean out the pantry and get rid of high fat and high sugar foods. It may take some time for your child to get used to healthy snacks, such as fruits and low fat cheese, but this is a necessary step. Along with this, you will need to help your child learn about eating healthy. This could be harder with older children, so take some time to find healthy recipes and to try new foods that he or she may like.

Exercise will be next on the list. Your child, no matter the age, needs to get outside and get some exercise. If you do not live far from school, walk with your child each day for added calorie burning. Encourage limited screen time on the television and computer. Have a family game of basketball or tag football in the evenings. Your child will appreciate your time and will benefit from the exercise.

Lastly, when your child needs to lose weight, you need to remember that your child has feelings, too. Never tell your child they are on a diet or that they are fat. Instead, encourage a healthy lifestyle for health. Your child will thank you for it.
