What is the impact of low blood pressure on health?
(28 Jan 2008)

Most people expect that problems with blood pressure means high blood pressure, but this is not always the case. In fact, there are many people that have low blood pressure. While low blood pressure can be good for some people, it can cause some problems for others.

So, is low blood pressure good or bad? Take a look.

Low blood pressure is a blood pressure measurement that is less than 90/60. This measurement measures the pressure of the arteries when the heart beats and the pressure in the arteries when the heart rests. It is important to note that normal blood pressure is usually around 120/80, although this can vary from person to person. It is quite common for a person that is in excellent shape such as an athlete or one who exercises and eats healthy, to have low blood pressure. This is when low blood pressure is good. Low blood pressure is often a sign of a healthy cardiovascular health in those that are in good health. If you are in good health and you are not overweight, then your doctor will not think twice about low blood pressure.

When is low blood pressure bad? In some people, especially in the elderly, low blood pressure can actually be a bad sign. If blood pressure falls below the normal levels, it could be a sign of inadequate blood flow to vital organs such as the heart or the brain. If a person has low blood pressure all the time, then it is probably just normal for that person. However, if blood pressure suddenly drops, then it could mean that the heart or brain could be deprived of necessary blood supply. That is when medical help may be needed. Low blood pressure coupled with feelings of lightheadedness or dizziness means you should see your doctor.

If you suspect that you are having a problem with your low blood pressure, never hesitate to see your physician.
