Clearing up a problem with acne may be as easy as going to your local drugstore and picking up a lotion, cream or acne gel. Some people may find that they have very good luck forgoing the visit to the dermatologist and opting for an over the counter acne solution. Here is a look at popular drugstore acne remedies.



  • Benzoyle Peroxide: If you go to the local pharmacy or drugstore and look at the acne products, you will find a whole line of products that contain benzoyle peroxide. This is because this chemical is very effective for treating acne that is already present. Clearasil cream is a popular acne remedy that contains this ingredient.


    The idea is that it will dry out the pimple and leave your skin clean and clear. Sometimes you may find you have dryness or irritation if you use it for a long period of time in the same area.
  • Astringent: Many companies that make acne products also make astringent. Astringent often contains alcohol and is used to clean the face. While some astringents may dry out the face, it is effective when used as an acne remedy. It will wash away any residue, dirt or grease left in the pours of your face.
  • Salicylic acid: This is a product that many acne remedies contain. It is very effective for treating stubborn acne breakouts and blackheads, which are often very hard to treat. This may come in creams or gels and you may even find this as a prescription. Over the counter acid will be less concentrated, while prescription forms will have a higher percentage of the salicylic acid.
