Acne is a very common skin condition that affects almost every person at some time or the other, though most cases appear during adolescence. There are many popular myths about the cause of acne, including build-up of toxins and an over-stimulated sex drive. However, the reality is quite dull!
Acne simply occurs when an oil gland (sebaceous gland) on your skin is infected. This usually happens when dead skin cells block the opening (pore) of the oil gland. The sebum (oil) inside is trapped and attracts bacteria, and soon you have an infection. Acne can occur in many forms, including whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples. The main thing to remember is to never try to pop acne, especially pimples. This will only release the harmful bacteria, which will then infect even more parts of your skin! Another side effect is the formation of ugly spots or scars due to the damage caused to the skin. For the same reason, avoid scratching the acne, even if it itches.
In most cases, over-the-counter medication works very well on acne. These lotions and creams contain active chemical ingredients that dry up the acne and destroy the bacteria. If you prefer natural remedies, you can apply a small amount of aloe vera gel, which has active ingredients that kill bacteria, speed up the skin’s healing, and prevent any scarring. Some people also get good results from tea tree oil; soak a cotton swab with the oil and gently dab it on the acne, several times a day. If your acne feels very itchy, you can cover it with a paste of baking soda and water. This will protect the affected skin and reduce the itchiness. However, you need to take some additional steps to ensure that acne does not reoccur.
The simplest thing to do is to cleanse your face at least twice a day. This helps to remove the dead skin cells and any excess sebum. Avoid chemical cleansing agents as they irritate your skin, which can lead to an acne breakout. It is recommended that you use a mild solution of salicylic acid, which is effective in clearing dead skin cells. Many people claim that oily food can cause acne. While there is no medical proof of this, choosing a healthier diet will only help you get a fitter body and healthier skin. Your skin will also benefit from drinking lots of fluids to keep it hydrated and smooth.
