The most common kind of thrush occurs in the genitals. Thrush is a yeast infection that occurs when there is an increase in the growth of the candida fungus.


In women, this growth of the fungus causes a change in the acid balance of the vagina, leading to thrush. Thrush causes a red soreness in the vagina but you can identify it from other yeast infections by its typical symptoms – intense scratching and a creamy, cheese-like discharge. Thrush can also cause a painful burning but this is a more advanced symptom.

The first thing you should do to treat thrush is to clean the affected area by washing it. Do not use soaps, shower gels and other products can worsen the infection. Ensure that the area is always clean and dry. Avoid using lubricants and spermicidal creams because these increase the infection. You can also apply aloe vera gel and melaleauca oil to cure minor cases of thrush. Avoid alcohol and sugar if you think that you are susceptible to thrush because these products encourage the growth of candida. You can treat thrush at home but it is advisable to seek medical advice because you can infect your partner with it (penile thrush) and your baby as well.
