Causes of Asthma

You have probably heard a lot about asthma. You may have seen people taking treatment or experienced treatment yourself. While this respiratory problem usually strikes children, many adults suffer from asthma as well.

It is serious and if you think you or your child is suffering from this problem, it is vital that you seek medical attention. Here is a look at what causes asthma.

There are several known risk factors and causes of asthma. In most people, asthma is triggered by allergies or physical exertion. A small asthma attack can leave you feeling breathless and wheezy. A severe attack left untreated can actually lead to death. Essentially what happens during an asthma attach is that the airways that take the air in and out of your lungs begin to restrict. This causes a very narrow passageway for breathing. Coincidentally, if you suffer from asthma, then it is a chronic illness. You may outgrow attacks, but few people outgrow the problems altogether.

During an asthma attack, the lining of the airways become red and inflamed. This inflammation makes breathing labored and difficult. When you are in contact with a trigger (such as dust, pollen, pet dander or even cigarette smoke), the airways immediately react and constrict. You will experience a wide range of symptoms depending on the severity of the attack. These can include the wheezing as mentioned above, as well as a feeling of tightness in the chest. Those that suffer from chronic problems with asthma will be most susceptible during the morning and late at night.

People that have issues with this medical problem usually know and seek medical attention. It is important that a health care provider assess the situation and recommends a good medical treatment. Inhalers are popular, as are allergy medications that can control the triggers.
