Do you have any home remedies for restless leg syndrome
(24 Jan 2008)

Wittmaack-Ekbom's syndrome is a condition that usually affects the legs but is also noticed in the arms and torso on rare occasions. It is more commonly referred to as restless leg syndrome. A person suffering from this condition constantly feels the need to move his or her legs to prevent pain and uncomfortable or odd sensations in the limbs.

Moving the limbs provides temporary relief from the pain, itching, burning or tickling sensation just below the skin. The condition gradually intensifies over a period of time. The symptoms are more obvious when the person is at rest, especially while sleeping during the night, thus often leading to insomnia, anxiety and depression. The cause for this condition is usually unknown but has been associated with iron deficiencies, obesity, low physical activity, toxins, alcohol, caffeine, smoking, hormone imbalances, some antidepressants and chronic illnesses like kidney, lung and heart dysfunction, nerve disorders and circulatory disorders. It could also be an inherited disorder that becomes more severe with advancing age.

A balanced intake of all the nutrients especially the various vitamins, particularly B and E and minerals like iron and magnesium reduce the symptoms of restless leg syndrome. Drinking plenty of water helps in keeping the body hydrated and also assists digestion and the proper circulation of blood. The consumption of chocolates, tea, coffee and other caffeine products should be cut done as they tend to aggravate restless leg syndrome. Alcohol and tobacco should be avoided as they are detrimental to the proper functioning of the body. The nicotine in tobacco also acts as a stimulant, restricting a person from falling asleep. Being relaxed and calm, especially before going to bed will minimize sleepless nights. Stress may not be the reason for restless leg syndrome but it definitely has the ability to aggravate the condition. A teaspoon of equal proportions of passionflower, hops and valerian powder, when added to boiling water and drunk before going to bed, acts as a sedative and relaxant. A hot bath or leg massages may help in relaxing the muscles thus preventing discomfort. Walking around the house, in the night, may assist in keeping the legs still so that you can sleep peacefully for a few hours, thus reducing other illnesses that may emerge due to insufficient rest. If you are on medication, consult your doctor about alternatives if you feel that the prescribed medication is causing jittery legs. A brisk walk daily and a few stretching exercises will also reduce the symptoms of restless leg syndrome.
