Taking Care of Your Feet with Diabetes
There are many important aspects of taking good care of your body when you suffer from diabetes. Not only do you have to carefully monitor your glucose level, take medications or insulin injections and eat right, but you also have to make sure you take care of your feet. Those suffering from diabetes often develop problems with foot ulcers and this can be a serious problem.
What are foot ulcers? There are millions of people that suffering from diabetes. Many of these people must learn to manage problems with circulation. Oftentimes, diabetics can develop issues of nerve damage, especially the nerves that travel to the feet. This can lead to impair sensations to the feet and lead to wounds and ulcers that can require surgery or even amputation. Many times, these wounds are very slow to heal and can cause chronic wounds.
So, if you have diabetes, what can you do to make sure that you do not develop foot ulcers? You have to take the time to take proper care of your feet.
- Most doctors recommend that you take a look at your feet every day to look for blisters or sores. If you find something, you should treat it right away with a good antibacterial ointment and if the problem persists or worsens, you should not delay in visiting your doctor.
- The other thing you can do to reduce your chances of developing serious wound on your feet is to make sure that you wear good fitting shoes. Avoid shoes that hurt your feet or cause blisters.
- You should also wear clean and absorbent socks at all times and if you are active during the day, change out your socks regularly. This will help keep your feet clean, reducing the chance of irritation.
- Foot powders are also quite helpful. It is also recommended that you keep your toenails at a good length, never too long or too short and if you are unable to do this on your own, consider having pedicures on a regular basis.
Keep your feet healthy and you will go a long way in preventing nasty foot problems in the future.
