If you have just been diagnosed with diabetes, whether it is Type I or Type II, you may feel confused and not know what to do next. The most important thing is to make sure that you follow your doctor’s orders and take the prescribed medication. You will also make sure that you understand the disease and what you can do to help your condition.

Learning about your condition:
After you have been diagnosed you can become a better patient and a healthier person by understanding your disease. Diabetes is very common and you can live a normal life when you control you your condition. Your doctor is a great source of information and may even give you literature and websites where you can go to get additional information.

Your doctor may also recommend that you see a specialist to help you control your diabetes.

Follow your doctor’s orders:
Diabetes is best controlled when you do everything you can to stay healthy. You need to make sure that you know what your doctor wants you to do. That includes changing your diet, getting the right amount of exercise and taking medication or insulin injection. Some people will need to take insulin several times a day and you when you have diabetes, it is important that you inject the right amount at the same times each day.

Getting exercise and changing your diet:
Many people can control their diabetes by changing their diets and getting exercise. Usually, Type II diabetes best responds to this type of treatment. Understand the foods that you can and cannot eat. Some foods will cause your blood sugar levels to soar while others will cause a dip. Understand how what you eat affects the way you feel.

Diabetes is not a death sentence. Many people live long and normal lives after they get their diabetes in control.
