The Difference Between Type I and Type II Diabetes

There are two different types of diabetes. One is called Type I and the other is called Type II. Type I is often called “juvenile” diabetes because this is the kind that most affects children. Type II is the type of diabetes that can strike a person at any age and is sometimes controlled with diet and exercise. Here is a closer look at the differences between the two.

Type I Diabetes:
As mentioned, Type I diabetes is often called juvenile diabetes. Children (and sometimes adults) are diagnosed with this form of diabetes and are usually dependent on insulin for the rest of their lives. Most of the time, this type of diabetes cannot be controlled by diet and exercise alone. In most cases of Type I diabetes, the body stops making insulin and cannot compensate for the loss. This causes all of the classic symptoms of the disease, including weight loss and excessive thirst. Insulin is given through daily injections to help the body.

Type II Diabetes:
This type of diabetes most often occurs in adults and happens when the body cannot produce enough insulin. Being overweight can contribute to this form of diabetes so diet and exercise can often help. If Type II diabetes cannot be controlled through diet and exercise, insulin is given through injections. It is interesting to note that approximately 95% of all diabetes cases are caused by Type II and it can occur in children, although it is rare.

Diabetes is widespread and affects adults and children alike. Either form of diabetes will require close monitoring of the diet and supervision of a doctor. This is the only way to adequately treat and monitor this disease. Left uncontrolled, diabetes can cause serious health issues and even death. It is imperative to receive proper medical attention when suffering from diabetes.
