Throat congestion remedies

Excessive mucous causes difficulty in breathing, and to ease this try a steam treatment. Steam liquefies the mucous and helps the congestion to flow out. A variety of essential oils like lavender, tea-tree oil, or eucalyptus work well.

You can bring a quart of water to boil and drop a few drops of any one of the oils in it. Inhale the aromatic steam released by this. You can use a commercially available humidifier too, as many come with separate compartments to include essential oils.

As a quick fix you can also spend a few extra minutes in the shower as the steam released can also help clean the nasal passages and throat.

Another remedy that really soothes and eases congestion is tea. A variety of green and herbal teas are readily available or you could brew some of your own. You can try herbal alternatives such as chamomile, gingerroot, Echinacea, and peppermint. Bring a pint of water to boil, and pour it over an ounce of fresh peppermint leaves. Allow the brew to steep for 10 minutes. Add a spoonful of dark honey to a cup of this concoction and drink 3-4 times a day. You can try a glass of warm water with some lemon juice as well. To reduce the tartness of this mixture you can add a spoonful of dark honey and sip it as often as you require.
