Information on child birth The loss of hair is a normal occurrence post pregnancy and is not permanent. During pregnancy the estrogen levels in a woman's body are high higher than usual, but once the child is born, there is a drop in these high levels. Hair then slips into what is known as telegen or ‘resting' phase, and falls out. This hair loss generally occurs between three and six months after pregnancy, and although you cannot stop the hair loss completely, you can help cut it down by not tying your hair in pigtails, corn rows, tight hair rollers or braids, as they pull and stress our hair.
Using shampoos and conditioners that contain biotin and silica as well as keeping a shorter haircut for the duration also helps. In terms of controlling the hair loss through your diet, eating meals that contain high amounts of fruits and vegetables is highly beneficial as they contain flavonoids, many of which are antioxidants. These antioxidants help in providing protection for hair follicles and encourage hair growth. Protein rich foods like milk, eggs, pulses, and nuts are also good for your hair. If you use blow dryers and other heated hair instruments, try to use the cooler, lower settings. If the hair loss continues at the same rate for more than seven or eight months it is best to consider a visit to your physician for further diagnosis.
