Rheumatism is a swelling of the ligaments and tendons of the joints or muscles. It begins with fever, pain and soreness of the affected area, at times becoming so sensitive, that even clothing aggravates the pain. In most cases, the affected areas tend to get swollen.

The illness is commonly found in middle aged and elderly people, often involving problems with other organs, such as the kidneys, heart, liver and lungs. There is a variety in the kind of rheumatism that could affect a person, the most common among them being gout, rheumatoid arthritis, osteo-arthritis, spondylitis, tennis elbow and frozen shoulder.
Exposure to wet, cold conditions worsen the problem, but the exact cause of rheumatism still remains unknown. Extensive studies have shown that rheumatism could possibly be brought on by eating foods that lead to excessive formation of acid in the body, consuming excessive amounts of fatty foods, the intake of refined sugar and eating meat on a daily basis. Tooth infections, hormonal imbalance, gall bladder problems, tonsillitis and toxins in the blood are other probable causes, as are hereditary factors.

Rheumatism can be treated by consuming two table spoons of raw potato juice daily, as this helps in reducing inflammation and relieving pain. Walnuts have anti rheumatic properties and it is advised that five or six walnuts be chewed properly, every day. Celery seeds are another well recommended remedy for rheumatism especially rheumatoid arthritis and a powder of these seeds should be taken daily. Rosemary oil is known for its anti inflammatory properties and soaking the affected parts in a tub of warm water with rosemary oil will provide much relief. Another well known anti inflammatory ingredient is garlic, and adding a clove or two of the same to your daily diet does prove beneficial. It is advised that green leafy vegetables and fresh fruit juices be consumed as they provide the body with the necessary amounts of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients to overcome tissue damage and assist healing. Supplements of calcium, vitamin C, vitamin E and magnesium should be taken to promote healing and reduce inflammation. Avoiding foods that are sour to taste is advised, because they tend to increase the acidic content of the blood, leading to aggravation of the rheumatism. Similarly, avoid consuming sugar, white bread, meat and highly seasoned foods as they are difficult to digest and lead to the production of toxins in the body. Keeping the body free of moisture, warm and covered at all times will help in preventing rheumatism.

Rheumatism treatment

The simplest way to deal with rheumatism is to try to live a stress-free life. In the same direction, the practice of yoga and breathing exercises also helps. The swelling of joints can be reduced by relaxing in a tub of warm water with rosemary mixed into it. Muscle pains can be reduced by applying a mixture of garlic extract and horse radish extract, and then massaging the joint or muscle.

Cod liver oil (2-3 teaspoons) mixed with orange juice helps strengthen the bones and should be consumed at night before sleeping. About 2-3 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar, mixed with honey in a glass of warm water, taken 2-3 times a day over a period of at least a month will also help in greatly improving the patient's health. Other remedies that are easy to prepare include the extract of raw potato juice, consumed in quantities of 2-3 teaspoons, or a glass of carrot juice mixed with 1-2 spoons of lemon extract. Either one of these mixtures should be taken 2-3 times a day. However, one of the most important aspects of treating rheumatism is a patient's diet. Food consumed by the patient should contain adequate quantities of green leafy vegetables, fresh fruits, whole wheat grains and cereals. Equally important, you should strictly avoid junk foods and oily or spicy foods, as well as red meat.
