Gray hair treatment

Graying of hair normally begins by the age of 30, but in some people, hair can turn gray in the teens or even earlier. Although this is referred to as premature graying, it is not something to be worried about as it does not usually indicate the presence of any disorder or deficiency. Graying occurs due to a decrease in melanin production in hair roots, and the age at which this begins is almost entirely genetic.

In addition, although there are many drugs, herbs, dietary supplements and home remedies that claim to be able to stop or reverse the loss of hair pigmentation, there is unfortunately not a single one that works.

However, that said, there are some drugs that can contribute to graying of hair. If your son is on any medication and you suspect that this is the case, you can check with your doctor. One study in 1996 also suggested that smoking tobacco may be a factor in premature graying. A few disorders may also cause premature graying, but as long as your son is otherwise normal, there is nothing for him to worry about. If the gray hair bothers him too much, there are of course cosmetic solutions such as dying his hair, at least for the time being.
