(22 Jan 2008)

Abdominal or stomach pain can range from being mild to severe. It is not an ailment by itself, but rather is a sign or symptom of an underlying condition. This kind of pain very often tends to be non-specific and, as mentioned earlier, could be the outcome of various conditions.

The abdominal cavity is made up of a large number of organs.  At times such kind of a pain may be directly linked to one particular organ, such as the ovary, bladder and so on. While at other times the pain may originate from within the digestive system. To cite examples, it could be caused due to diarrheal cramping, food poisoning or appendicitis.  Abdominal pain may be piercing, cramp-like, stabbing, dull or sharp.
Additionally it could last from a few seconds to several hours. The location as well as the nature of the pain helps in determining its cause. What you should or should not eat will depend to a large extent on the reason behind the pain. Consulting a doctor would be recommended as he/she could help get to the root of the problem and treatment can then follow accordingly.

However, here are a few dietary tips. Reduce the intake of oily foods, deep fried foods and spicy foods. Certain foods are known to create excess gas in the system and hence it would be advisable to reduce their intake. Broccoli, cauliflower, green peppers, pastries, milk products and dried beans are example of such foods. However, this does not imply that you should avoid all kinds of foods that are rich in fiber; it simply means that you need to cut down on their consumption.  Other items that you may need to cut out include carbonated and caffeinated beverages such as black tea, coffee, beer, bubbly water and sodas.

On the other hand if the stomach pain is caused due to constipation, then you would then need to include fiber in your diet, to promote regular bowel movement. Green leafed vegetables such as spinach and radish are rich in fiber and should be had regularly. Among fruits, bananas will prove to be beneficial. Foods that you could include in your daily diet are light sauces, pastas, carrots, squash, cottage cheese and low-fat cheese. Light salads and vegetable soups would also work well for this condition. Consuming vegetable and fruit juices will also help in making you feel better. Carrot, beetroot and cucumber juice if had every morning, will help in reducing symptoms.

Stomach pain diet

The stomach pain could result from many causes. If it is indeed due to an improper diet you could start by making sure you are not overeating. Instead of eating 3 large meals a day you could try eating 5-6 smaller portions over the day. Avoid eating fruit after a meal. Instead eat it on an empty stomach, about half an hour before a meal. All the while remember to chew your food well.

Reduce or eliminate greasy, over-fried fast food and try a variety of homemade meals. Some food products can lead to excessive gas and can contribute to the stomach pain. Foods that you can avoid include cooked dried beans, milk products, pastries, green peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, and excessive amount of wheat items. This does not mean you eliminate all fiber rich food from your diet. Instead consume them in moderation or gradually increase the levels over time. Other items to eliminate include caffeinated and carbonated beverages including coffee, sodas, bubbly water, beer and black tea.

Foods you can include in your diet are low-fat cheese, cottage cheese, squash, carrots, and pastas with light sauces. You could indulge in vegetable soups and light salads with a simple olive oil and lemon juice dressing.
