Toenail fungus also known as onychomycosis is a very common infection. A group of fungi known as dermatophytes are responsible for this condition. Onychomycosis is a contagious condition that can lead to a severe discoloration and disfiguration of the affected nail.
A fungal infection of this type should not be ignored as it can have serious repercussions. The fungus thrives by feeding on keratin; the substance that your nail is made up of. It is quite easy to identify this infection, as the concerned nail becomes overgrown and thick with a yellowish brown hue. At times, if the infection is severe, the nail may begin to crumble, after which it eventually falls off.
Oregano oil, as you mentioned, is an excellent remedy for toe nail fungus. It possesses antifungal, analgesic, antiviral, anti-parasitical, antibacterial and antiseptic properties, which makes it ideal for this kind of an infection. However, the oil should not be used for more than three weeks as a mode of treatment. You will need to mix 2-3 drops of the oil with a teaspoon of olive oil. This mixture should then be applied on the affected nail, as well as the skin that surrounds it. Leave the application on overnight and rinse it off the following morning, with lukewarm water. Dry the nail with a blow dryer, as any kind of moisture present will simply aggravate the situation. Additionally here are some other home remedies that you could also implement to get rid of this infection. Tea tree oil is also considered to be very effective when it comes to treating onychomycosis. It is a very potent fungicide and anti-septic that will enable a speedy recovery. Apply a few drops of the oil on the concerned nail and leave it on for a couple of hours. This remedy should be performed daily on a regular basis till you begin to see visible results.
Tea tree oil when mixed in equal quantities with lavender oil, also serves as an effective topical application for this condition. Mix together an equal amount of warm water and apple cider vinegar. Now soak your feet in this solution for about 20 minutes. Next, dry the nail well with the help of a hair dryer in-order absorb any moisture. Include plenty of pro-biotic foods, such as kefir and yogurt, into your daily diet. Reduce the intake of dairy products, sugar and vinegar and keep the nail dry and clean at all times.

You will usually not feel any pain but if you do not treat it, you might develop associated symptoms. There are many home remedies that you can use to treat and control this condition. Oregano essential oil is thought to be a fungicide and can be found in many nail fungus treatment formulas. However, oregano essential oil can also cause some amount of irritation on your skin and you use it carefully. Discontinue this treatment if you develop any dermal irritation at all. You can also use vinegar because the acidic content of vinegar will help you get rid of the fungus. Apply vinegar all over your infected nail and ensure that you reach under the toenail as well.
