The location of the back pain seems to indicate that the problem could possibly be because of an improper posture while sitting and doing work. This is generally an injury that is associated with putting in many hours while sitting at work and not taking frequent breaks to stretch and relax the muscles. This is a conservative assessment.
Your condition could be a much more serious one, if the backache has persisted for a very long period of time. Any pain that is chronic in nature, which can be pronounced if the pain has persisted for more than 12 weeks - is an indication of serious injury to the spine. It is best that you visit a doctor every three months to ensure that such problems do not arise.
The area of the back that you mentioned that was giving you pain is the thoracic region. This area typical faces a lot of stress due to improper posture and stress when working with a computer. To understand why this happens, draw a parallel between the muscles of your body and a rubber band. When it is pulled, it is taut and when it is not it is a flimsy mass of rubber. Now picture yourself sitting at a desk with your arms dangling down your sides or resting on the armrest. In this position, the muscles of the back are not in a pulled or taut position and are relaxed. Your lower back in fact would be taking more weight and if you could feel the muscle in your lower back, you would know the strain. To return to posture, now imagine that you are typing away at your desk. Now, you are pulling your muscles outward and the muscle is now stretched. This by itself is not too dangerous but if your arms are not supported by an armrest or the position of the armrest is incorrect, then without even knowing it, you are setting yourself up for muscle strain.
This is what ergonomics tries to overcome. The governing principle is to exert the body as little as possible when in a sitting position. Ideally, the upper half of you body should be comfortably upright and this is the base position that a chair should take by allowing you to rest in an upright position. Additionally, the armrest position is also crucial. Your fingers should be only an inch and a half higher than the position that your hands are in. It is also very important to take breaks, stretch, and relax by pulling your arms behind you.

Remedy for backache
- Swallow two or three cloves of garlic with water (do not chew them) immediately after getting up in the morning. Do this regularly and you will find a marked improvement in your back pain.
- Fry 15 cloves of garlic in 100 ml of mustard oil, coconut oil or sesame oil on a low flame till the cloves turn a deep brown. Let it cool and massage with it when warm on the affected area. Take a warm water bath after half an hour.
- Mix the juice of one lemon with salt and consume it daily for relief from back pain. Do not try this if you suffer from acidity.
- Maintain a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables and pulses.
- Avoid extraneous physical work.
- Always sit straight on your chair and do not bend your back to pick up but sit down and then do it.
- Try sleeping without your pillows.
- Do not sit in one position for a longer period and do some stretching exercises in between.
- Do not lean heavily on your elbows or carry heavy objects.
- Do yoga exercises specifically focusing on your shoulders, neck and upper back.
- Do hot fermentation in the neck and shoulder region at least twice a day or whenever the pain aggravates.
