Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease, and you should avoid self-medication in place of proper medical treatment. However, there are several home remedies available that help ease the discomfort and pain caused by the symptoms of malaria, including fever.
  • Cinnamon is a common remedy for colds and fevers, including malarial fever. Powder a stick or two of cinnamon, boil it in a glass of water, and then add a pinch of pepper powder and a teaspoon of honey.
  • Holy basil, known as holy basil in Sanskrit, is a traditionally used medicinal plant in India, and is quite effective in treating malarial fever. You can simply chew the raw leaves of the plant or basil pills that are available over the counter. Alternatively, you can prepare a simple concoction at home — crush ten grams of the plant’s leaves and mix the juice with two or three grams of pepper powder.
  • Also add fenugreek seeds to your diet, as they strengthen the body’s defenses against the malaria parasites.
  • In general, it is advisable to avoid tea, coffee, alcohol, oily food, spicy food, meat, and tobacco. Restrict yourself to a natural diet, with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables in particular.

Malarial fever treatment

At the onset of a malarial fever an application of a pad soaked in cold salted water on the patient's forehead can bring down the temperature. If, however, the fever goes beyond 105°F, the patient should be enveloped in a clean sheet dipped in cold water. Do not use iced water or ice cubes during the application. Tap water can also be used.

Cinnamon is widely known to be a powerful cure for malaria. A teaspoon of fine-grained cinnamon boiled with 200ml of water should be consumed with a tinge of pepper and honey for taste.

One of the most effective herbs for this ailment is an infusion of a handful of holy basil mixed with half a teaspoon of black pepper powder taken daily. Holy basil has been well researched and is proven to have therapeutic, palliative and preventive properties. It also builds resistance within the immunity system.

The patient must be kept on a liquid diet comprising juices, milk and soups for imparting strength once the fever has descended. Grapefruit is known to be prescribed in diets for treating malaria, for its quinine-like properties.
