Fever blisters, also known cold sores, normally appear on the lips and outer areas of the mouth and are caused by the herpes virus. It is not possible to cure fever blisters, but you can use a number of home and natural remedies to reduce the severity of these sores. Controlling your diet and reducing the intake of acidic and salty foods, caffeine, chocolate, peanuts, and oatmeal can quicken the healing process. This process can also be shortened by adding Vitamin B12 and folic acid to your diet.
  • Ice is commonly used to soothe fever blisters. Apply ice on the sores for ten minutes each hour to prevent the virus from spreading to the skin. Another method to relieve the pain is to apply juice from the aloe plant or aloe gel to the inflamed area. The application of aloe extract will ensure that the inflammation does not increase.
  • You can also use a clean, moistened finger to apply some common salt on to the sore for a minute. Repeat this process twice a day for two or three days.
  • In addition, Sage, Tea Tree Oil, and tea bags can be used to treat fever blisters. Hold a moistened tea bag to the blister for a couple minutes every hour to relieve the pain.

Fever blisters home remedies

Fever blisters lasts sometime between a week to a fortnight. The moment you sight a cold sore and feel the tingling associated with it, apply an ice-pack once every hour to thwart further growth. If the sore appears to be oozing, applying a mud-mask overnight will help dry it up and heal quickly. Also try dabbing the sore with a pinch of common salt on a moistened finger for just a minute a day for the initial 2-3 days. Once the sore dries up, petroleum jelly or a small cotton ball soaked in Vitamin E oil can prove to be excellent moisturizers to avoid the sore from further breaking up and healing the wound. Try keeping away from the sun during the outbreak of cold sores.

Most importantly don't miss out on those vitamins. Vitamin rich foods and vegetables should be at hand at the start of an outbreak, whilst foods containing seeds, groundnuts, cocoa, oats, cereals and wheat products should be restrained as far as possible. Incorporate Lysine rich foods from yogurt, potatoes, milk, fish, chicken, etc. in your diet. Research indicates that daily intake of Lysine prevents cold sores. Disinfect your toothbrush after every brush with denatured ethanol alcohol or in diluted hydrogen peroxide, to prevent a relapse.
