The same virus that causes chicken pox causes shingles. It is always better to see a doctor, as treatments prescribed at an early stage will work more effectively.

Alternatively, the following can be followed at home

  • Do not scratch as this may increase the chances of secondary bacterial infection and it may cause scarring.
  • Chamomile oil is used to treat shingles. It can be applied by blending the oil with   bergamot, balm, lavender and geranium.
  • Take 10 drops of German Chamomile, 2 drops of geranium, 4 drops of bergamot, 6 drops of balm and 5 drops of lavender. Pour the oil on a poultice and place it on the affected area.
  • Cool tap water compress can be applied to the weeping blisters in order to sooth and help dry blisters. The application of this compress should be stopped once the blisters have dried.
  • Keep the affected area clean with a mild soap and water.
  • Application of petroleum jelly also helps in healing the blisters.
  • Wear loose clothing to avoid rubbing the rashes.
  • Application of apple cider vinegar which is made from thyme and Vitamin E oil or peppermint oil also aids in healing.
  • You can also apply tea tree oil on the shingles which dry the shingles and they usually disappear after a few days.
  • You can also drink pennyroyal tea frequently.
  • Consumption of Lobelia, ginger. Cinnamon, bayberry and valerian root also help the healing process.
