Home Remedies for Cold Sore
  • Read on the following home remedies for cold sores:
  • Topical application of sunscreen lotions before venturing out helps in preventing the recurrence of cold sores. Studies have revealed that sunlight triggers cold sores and the best sunscreen is SPF 15 also known as sun protection factor 15. If you don’t apply this sunscreen then you might experience new outbreaks of cold sores on your lips and other susceptible areas.
  • Your toothbrush can stimulate the action of herpes virus that may re-infect you again with the symptoms of cold sores.

So, change your toothbrush if you feel any kind of blister forming.
  • Prepare a compress of milk, let it cool down at normal room temperature and then apply on the sores. This enhances the speed of recovery and also relieves pain.

  • Amino acid arginine is required for the metabolism of herpes virus. So, avoid taking arginine rich foods that can cause cold sores. Some of the highly enriched food sources of arginine are cola, peas, chocolates, cereals, peanuts, gelatin, cashews and beer.
  • You can also try a supplement of lysine to counteract arginine. Lysine is an amino acid that can neutralize the action of herpes virus.
  • Apply ice or any other over the counter cream containing zinc oxide directly to the cold sores. This will enhance the speed of recovery.
