Information on Irregular Menstruation Metrorrhagia is the medical term used for spotting or irregular bleeding between periods. The color of this blood can be bright red, pink mucus or rusty brown. However it is never considered as a first day of menstruation.
Spotting which occurs at the middle of a menstrual cycle is often considered normal, in fact it can be a sign of excellent fertility (it indicates ovulation). When spotting occurs a week before the normal menstrual cycle it can be an indication for implantation.
Some other causes for bleeding between the periods include hormonal fluctuations, intra uterine devices, abortion, starting or stopping an oral contraceptive or estrogen, vaginal dryness, low thyroid levels, sexually transmitted diseases, uterine fibroids, infections or certain drugs.
Abnormal spotting that is bleeding for days can be due to low levels of progesterone in the body. To rule out any doubt or any complication it would be advisable to visit a specialist to know the exact cause of the spotting and treatment would follow accordingly.
