I had gastric bypass surgery in 2006. Now I have swelling in the stomach area and gas really bad. What can I take to control the gas? Is papaya good for gas?

Smelly gas usually has different reasons from gastric bypass surgery. Either you are unable to digest your food, or you may be eating in the wrong way. In any case, the best way to get rid of gas is to chew on a piece of ginger as often as you can. A teaspoon of dry ginger powder with a pinch of asafetida can be taken with warm water in the morning or at night.

Initially, this may make you pass more gas, but it will also help in providing a long-term permanent solution for the problem. Try to avoid gassy food for a week and see if it makes a difference. Remove corn, aerated drinks, beans, lentils, legumes, fermented foods and potatoes from your diet and see if it helps. One of the commonest causes of bad gas odor is consuming milk and milk products that go undigested. If you can also try avoiding those for a week, you should know at once if it helps in providing relief from flatulence. You must also try to cut down on strong-smelling foods in order to avoid malodorous gas. Check the way you eat. Chew slowly, and completely before you swallow. Take your time to eat. If you eat in a rush, you will generally end up swallowing more air and this will make the problem worse.
