Advice on carpal tunnel syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful condition that affects your wrist. The median nerve, running between your foreman and your hand, is squeezed at your wrist for some reason. This median nerve is the one that controls the sensations that you experience in your palm.  This nerve also controls the movements that actually allow your fingers to move.  People suffering from this condition complain of an itching or even burning sensation in the palms of their hands. They often feel as if their hands are swollen or numb.  They also find that picking up objects or even folding their fingers to make a fist becomes difficult.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a fairly common condition and women are more likely to get affected by this than men. Most people who suffer from this condition require surgery in both their hands.   The surgery is fairly simple and is performed under local anesthesia. The doctors make a cut in the wrist and then cut the carpal ligament. This is done to enlarge the carpal tunnel. This type of surgery is known as Open release surgery. Endoscopic surgery is also performed under local anesthesia but reduces the chances of any scars developing on the wrists. This involves making an incision in the wrist and palm and inserting a camera through which the tissue is observed before the carpal ligament is cut.

Patients experience immediate relief from symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome after either of these surgeries. However, some patients do suffer from an infection or even stiffness and experience pain in the scar.    However, if you have noticed any symptom that makes you believe that you have an infection, you should consult your doctor immediately.
