The following home remedies and dietary tips would be very helpful in the treatment of gout -
  • Lose weight. Being overweight simply puts you at a high risk. Lose the weight gradually with a combination of diet and appropriate exercise.
  • The main aim to treat a gout patient is to bring down the uric acid levels. Foods with high purine content when consumed breaks down as uric acid in the body. Thus high purine foods should be avoided for quick recovery of gout. Common foods include non-vegetarian high protein foods like meat, poultry, fish, pork and organ meats. Also avoid broths and gravies of these foods.
  • Studies prove that vegan source of purine are not very harmful, thus milk and milk products, pulses and beans can be included in moderation.
  • Avoid beer and alcohol altogether as it largely interferes with the excretion of uric acid from the body.
  • Drink lots of fluids daily, this will help to flush the excess uric acid from the system.
  • Include lime in the diet as lemon juice stimulates the formation of calcium carbonate in the body. This helps prevent high uric acid flares.
  • Vegan sources of omega 3 fatty acids can be included in the diet (flaxseeds, sesame seeds, hempseeds and pumpkin seeds) as they would help to reduce joint inflammation and relieve pain.
