Cold health advice

Common cold is accompanied by a running nose, sore throat and sneezing. Congestion is broken by hydration therapy. Drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water is helpful.

Caffeinated beverages are better avoided, as they result in dehydration. Steam inhalation is a cost effective and simple technique. A humidifier is also helpful. Blowing the nose relieves you of some mucus. Blowing is done by holding a finger over one of the nostrils. This helps in re-entry of the mucus into the ear, causing ear infection. Nasal sprays prove beneficial. These can be substituted by home made saline solutions. Gargling with warm salt water is an age old remedy. Quarter teaspoon each of salt and baking soda is dissolved in quarter liter of water. This is filled in a neti pot and squirted into the nose. Close the other nostril. Allow the water to drain and the procedure is repeated twice. Rest helps in stimulating immunity towards any disorder or infection. Supplementation of ascorbic acid and zinc are recommended. A warm shower helps in keeping the nasal passage wet and moist. A glass of hot herbal tea or a bowl of soup proves beneficial. Sleeping at an elevated level helps.
