Hirsutism or unwanted hair is a constant and embarrassing trouble in women, especially adolescents. Development of coarse hair in the chest, lips, back, chin and abdomen is referred to as hypertrichosis or hirsutism. Excessive production of androgen, the male hormone results in excessive hair growth.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome or POCS is a contributing factor.

Hormone secreting tumors are a rare disorder. The unwanted hair is accompanied by change in voice, increase in muscle mass and acne, which are the other features of a male.

Cushing's syndrome, hyperthecosis, cancer or tumor of the ovary and adrenal gland, certain medications and congenital adrenal hyperplasia are the other causes of rarity. Reduction in weight causes a decrease in the male hormone secretion. Lightening the hair color through bleaching is also effective in hiding the hair. Chemical depilatory creams, waxing, shaving and plucking are the various methods of hair removal. These techniques, based on the method, have their own efficacy. Laser is an expensive method which causes permanent damage to the hair. Electrolysis is yet another expensive method that makes use of electrical current to disrupt the hair follicle, thereby further growth is inhibited.
