Anemia is a condition associated with unhealthy red blood cells, causing a decrease in the transfer of oxygen and other nutrients to the various cells and organs of the body. It is a chronic disorder, commonly seen in women and those with secondary complications. The number of red blood cells or hemoglobin is reduced or below the normal levels.
Decrease in the oxygen supply results in fatigue. Iron deficiency anemia is one of the most commonly seen types. Hemoglobin is synthesized in the bone marrow, which in turn requires the supply of iron. Inadequate iron supply causes decreased hemoglobin synthesis. Blood loss results in loss of iron, as in the case of menstruating women. Depletion of iron supplies by a fetus is seen to occur in case of a pregnant mother. Healthy red blood cells are produced in the presence of folate and cobalamine. Intestinal disorder causes the malabsorption of certain vitamins and is referred to as vitamin-deficiency anemia. Inability to absorb vitamin B 12 causes pernicious anemia. Production of abnormal and large blood cells is megaloblastic anemia. Anemia is associated with chronic diseases, like cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Reduction in the production ability of the bone marrow causes aplastic anemia. This is an auto immune disorder.
