Home remedies for diabetes Diabetes mellitus is a disorder characterized by increase in blood sugar levels. This is attributed to the inability of the body to secrete insulin or inadequate production of the same. Insulin is a hormone synthesized by the beta cells of the pancreas.
The normal sugar levels are 80 to 120 mg/dl. During diabetes, the levels are much higher. Stress, heredity, obesity, pancreatic malfunctioning, lack of physical activity, poor and unhealthy diet, improper lifestyle and any other underlying complication are some of the primary causes.
Grapefruit juice aids in decreasing the sugar levels. Overnight soaked fenugreek seeds are effective remedy. They can be consumed fully or mashed and sieved, thereby drinking the juice. Mango leaves are very helpful for diabetics. Three to four leaves are boiled and drunk everyday in an empty stomach. Bitter melon or bitter gourd holds a lot of controversy regarding its hypoglycemic effect, though animal studies are established. Whole grain foods, raw vegetables and fruits, such as papaya, guava, indian gooseberry and apple are considered. Avoid tubers and starchy vegetables. Dry ginger tea is useful, as they possess anti hyperglycemic properties. Another decoction of ten leaves each of bel, basil and margosa proves beneficial. An almond soaked overnight is also effective.
