Toenail fungus treatment

Toenail fungus is sometimes difficult to treat because the infection is underneath the nail and difficult to get at. Topical treatments are therefore not always effective. However, possibly the best home remedy for toenail fungus is vinegar.

Fill a small bucket or basin with vinegar, preferably apple cider vinegar, and soak your feet in it for half an hour, once a day. Dry your feet thoroughly after this. In general, it is a good practice to keep your feet and toe nails dry.

Moisture aggravates the condition by helping the fungus to grow.

You can also apply bleach or tea tree oil to your nails. File the surface of your nails before applying the treatment. This will make it easier for the bleach or oil to reach the fungus. If you decide to use bleach, first test a small amount on a single toe. If you have an adverse reaction, consider other options. You might also want to consider temporary nail removal. This will make it easier to reach the nail bed, where the fungal infection really is, and will thus make your topical applications more effective.

If none of these measures work, or if the infection is particularly painful, you should visit your doctor.
