Dark skin treatment

Dark skin, partly caused due to genes can become darker due to hyper pigmentation when the skin produces too much pigment melanin causing it to become darker. Another reason could be over-exposure to the sun's ultra-violet rays which again increase the production of pigment melanin. There are however several home remedies that help reduce this effect.


A simple home-made face-pack made with 1 tsp milk powder, 1 tsp honey, 1 tsp lemon juice and ½ tsp almond oil applied on the face for 10-15 minutes helps to reduce the effect of tanning. Other effective face-packs include gramflour pack made with 2-3 tsp of raw milk and a few drops of lime juice and oatmeal face- pack prepared with curd and tomato juice.

The ancient Indian remedy of turmeric mixed with lime juice is excellent since the antiseptic qualities of turmeric combine with the natural bleaching powers of lime juice to help lighten the skin tone and give it a glowing look. Dried orange peels mixed with curd applied to the face for 15 minutes also help in reducing the darkening effect of the sun's rays. Yet another excellent face-pack can be prepared by soaking almonds overnight and grinding it into a smooth paste with milk. This should be applied and left overnight on the face. Simply applying potato slices on the face or even grated tomato with lime juice helps in lightening dark skin.
