Cholesterol is often associated with the darker shades, but like many other substances in the body it is synthesized by our body and used to keep us healthy. Around 75% of cholesterol is produced by healthy liver and other cells in the body and 25% comes from daily diet. There are basically two types of cholesterol – HDL or high density lipoprotein that is the ‘good cholesterol' and LDL or low density lipoprotein cholesterol that is the ‘bad cholesterol'.
It is very important to strike a balance between both to avoid any health issues like heart diseases, diabetes or stroke. LDL cholesterol or the bad cholesterol besides naturally being present in the body can even be an inherited resource. A family history of high total cholesterol can be a predisposing factor. Other sources include a diet rich in saturated, trans fatty acid and cholesterol. A high level of LDL cholesterol when circulates in the blood can build up slowly and block the inner walls of the arteries which supply blood to the heart and brain leading to heart diseases and stroke.
