Hair growth follows a cycle that lasts between two to six years. During this time, each hair strand will grow one centimeter every month. At any point in time, majority of the hair on the scalp is in the growing stage, and a small amount of hair is in the resting stage.
This resting hair will then fall off after a couple of months, giving rise to new hair. Daily hair fall to some extent is considered normal. But in some cases, the hair fall becomes excessive and can eventually lead to loss of hair. This condition can occur at any age and can affect both males and females.
Hair fall and hair loss can be attributed to several factors. It is common to experience excessive hair loss a few months after a serious illness or surgical procedure. Hormonal fluctuations in the body are also likely to result in hair loss. Problems of the thyroid gland can affect hormonal levels in the body. If there are changes in the levels of estrogen and androgen, which are known as the female and male hormones respectively, it can lead to hair loss. Women tend to lose a lot hair just after pregnancy. This is due to the fact that during pregnancy there is a surge in hormonal levels. This prevents the hair from falling off. But after pregnancy, when the hormonal levels subside and become normal again, the hair begins to fall. Intake of certain medication may cause many side effects, one of which may be falling hair. Fungal infections can also lead to loss of hair on the scalp. Alopecia is another common cause of hair loss which results in patches of hair loss, which can then progress to complete hair loss.
To treat hair loss, you first need to determine the reason for its occurrence. There are also several home remedies that help to stimulate and enhance hair growth. Castor oil is known to be very beneficial for promoting hair growth. You can mix castor oil with coconut oil and add a few pieces of dried Indian gooseberry and then massage into the scalp. Applying a mixture of egg yolk and honey to the scalp and hair is also effective in preventing hair fall. Warm oil massages work well in stimulating the hair follicles and help greatly in proper hair growth. You can massage the scalp with warm almond oil daily. A hair pack made with warm olive oil, honey and cinnamon powder also serves to promote growth of hair. You can mix the pulp of raw mango with any oil of your choice and massage the scalp with it.

Loosing strands of hair can be due to various reasons like hormonal problems, stress due to an illness, certain medications, infections or some underlying disease. It is very important to know the exact cause for hair loss for an exact treatment. You can control your hair loss with these simple home remedies -
- Use lavender oil to massage your scalp thrice every week (alternate days). To promote circulation of blood under your scalp rub it with the tips of your fingers. Lavender oil works wonders for hair growth.
- If harsh chemicals and shampoos are not suitable for your hair use natural shampoo. For this soak few sapindus mucorosai pods at night and wash your hair with this solution next day morning.
- Boil few dry indian gooseberry pieces in 250 ml of coconut oil. Strain this and apply regularly to promote thick hair growth.
- Check your medications, if they are the cause for hair loss then consult your specialist for the same. Avoid stress of any kind, as this can promote hair loss.
- Include whole grains and cereals, sprouts, pulses, nuts, seeds, milk, eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet to provide adequate amounts of essential nutrients.
