Vomiting is usually caused due to factors such as a viral infection, motion sickness, illnesses and food poisoning. There are innumerable triggers that can result in vomiting. Vomiting is an act by which the stomach attempts to empty itself.

The stomach forcefully pushes against the lower end of the esophagus and forces its content out through the mouth. Vomiting is usually experienced in waves as the walls of the stomach and esophagus contract involuntarily and expels the foods and other secretions through the mouth.

When faced with stimuli the brain sends a signal to vomit to the stomach. These stimuli can be anything from tastes, smells, pain, infection, motion, medical conditions, injury, food allergies amongst other factors. Eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia are also a cause for vomiting. Problems of the gall bladder, appendicitis, migraine and vertigo are also triggers for vomiting. Intake of certain medications may cause a side effect of vomiting. Infection of the intestines, excessive consumption of alcohol and the early stages of pregnancy are also marked by vomiting. You need to first determine the cause of your sister’s vomiting in order to accordingly treat the problem or avoid the stimuli that are triggering the vomiting.

During a bout of vomiting, it is best to give the individual clear liquids as anything other than this will be difficult to digest. If the vomiting is being caused by a viral stomach infection, then the condition needs to run its course. The best treatment for this would be to get adequate rest and allow the body to fight the infection. Cold compresses applied to the forehead are very soothing and comforting and will make your sister feel better. Since she is losing a lot of water due to the vomiting, dehydration must be prevented. This can be achieved by maintaining the electrolyte balance in the body. You can give her an oral rehydration solution which is easily available over the counter. Ginger is very effective for stomach ailments and will help to ease nausea and vomiting. Ginger tea or ginger ale will help to reduce the stomach contractions. You can also make her slowly sip on a solution of lemon juice and honey.  For a simple home remedy to cure vomiting, you can boil a quarter teaspoon of aniseed in half a cup of water. This can be taken after straining to alleviate the vomiting. You can also make a clove tea by boiling a teaspoon of clove powder in a cup of water. This is known to fight nausea and vomiting.

Vomiting is a process in which the stomach forcefully removes foods and liquids in it. It is generally a very common ailment so there is no immediate need for medical attention. She could be vomiting due to various reasons such as overeating, upset stomach, infections, headache, or a flu. However, vomiting is symptomatic of other problems such as brain tumors and very high inter-cranial pressure so if she doesn’t stop vomiting after twenty-four to thirty-six hours, or if she starts to vomit more frequently, you then need to consult your doctor immediately.

Usually after vomiting, people either want to fill their stomachs or want to stay hungry. Both these options are not good for your system. All kinds of solid foods should be avoided for the first twelve hours after vomiting. Ask your sister to have a lot of liquids such as coconut water. This has a soothing effect on the stomach. A glass of chilled lime juice is also very effective. You need to squeeze 1 lime in a glass of cold water and just a little sugar and salt. You could also add some ice to make it really chilled. She needs to drink this every two hours. Having ginger, peppermint or mint tea will also make her feel better. Other liquids such as vegetable and fruit juices could also be consumed. The important thing to remember here is that she needs to drink the fluids really slowly, as the stomach is recovering and needs to get adjusted to the presence of any sort of food. The amount of fluid needed can be determined by the color of the urine. If the urine is deep yellow in color then she is not drinking enough water. The paler the urine gets, the better it is to prevent dehydration.

After twelve hours she can start having solid foods, such as rice, oatmeal and mashed potatoes. Avoid spicy, oily or heavy foods as they will only put pressure on her stomach. Besides following this diet, she should also have water mixed with honey throughout the day. This will give her some strength and will make her feel better. If the vomiting is due to consuming too much alcohol, you could ask her to eat slices of bread as that would help soak the liquid. Many times after vomiting, there is an unpleasant after taste, which could make her feel queasy in the stomach and make her want to throw up again.
