Cold in babies is also associated with runny nose, cough, scratchy throat and also fever. The babies find it difficult to eat, breathe or sleep. Cold in children can be spread through dirty hands, clothes, vessels and even in the air, especially in the winter season. It is not a very serious ailment but certain steps need to be taken to relieve from the symptoms of cold.
Common cures that can be useful to fight against cold in babies are:-
- If the baby can be breastfed then it is essential to be done even during cold as it can enhance the immunity. The breast milk contains certain antibodies that can kill certain viruses in the body.
- Application of saline drops in the nose can relieve the nasal congestion and hence can make breathing easy.
- Heat coconut oil with some powdered camphor for few minutes and allow it to cool to the Luke warm stage. Apply this oil on the chest, throat, and nose forehead and back twice a day. This will help in relieving the congestion.
- Take a glass of warm milk with addition of turmeric powder. This can soothe the throat.
- Take few aniseeds and wrap it in a cloth to make a ball. Heat this on a pan. When it is hot place it on the chest of the child and move it frontward and backwards. See to it that the cloth ball is not very hot. It should be bearable to the baby.
- For cold and congestion, take a juice of 1\2 lemon and warm water with an addition of 1 tablespoon honey in the morning.
However, if the cold and runny nose persists for more than ten days, then it is better to consult a doctor as it can lead to sinus infection.
