Nipple skin peeling remedies

I have noticed the last 6 months that my nipples have been peeling. I have been peeling it off and putting neosporin on them. What is causing this and how can I stop it? I have no children so it's not from breast feeding.

The peeling on the nipples that you are experiencing could just be a case of dry skin. Our skin is made up of three layers, the epidermis or outer layer, dermis or middle layer and hypodermis or inner layer. These layers all serve specific functions. The epidermis gets replaced every 28 days, giving rise to a newer layer in its place. This could be due to various environmental factors. As such when the skin peels, it is only temporary and once it sheds completely, new skin becomes visible. Factors that commonly affect our skin such as dryness or friction due to clothing could also affect the skin around the nipple. Eczema skin infection and psoriasis may cause the skin to peel off. There is also an extremely rare hereditary condition called peeling skin syndrome in which the skin peels continuously. Certain medications may also have result in skin peeling. Paget’s disease of the breast is a form of breast cancer in which peeling, sore and inflamed nipples are a symptom. This is however a very rare condition and affects women above the age of 50 years.

Peeling off the skin is not advisable, as it can cause scarring and even infection, which would then require further treatment. Intake of lots of water is very essential for dealing with any type of skin condition. Dry and peeling skin is also treated by ensuring consumption of adequate essential fatty acids (EFAs) in the diet. EFAs are important for the body and can be consumed through supplements in the diet. Foods containing EFAs are fatty oily fish, nuts, seeds, green leafy vegetables and whole grain cereal. Ensuring a higher intake of fish will serve to boost the proportion of omega 3 fatty acids in your diet, enhancing the overall health of the skin. Avoid intake of caffeine and alcohol as these cause the skin to dry out.

It is also a good idea to exfoliate the skin gently and then apply moisturizer to the area. Olive oil, turmeric and sandalwood may also be used in a paste to rejuvenate the dry peeling skin. Applying the juice of fresh mint on the affected areas also helps to reduce dryness. Applying grated cucumber over the affected areas for 20 minutes is very beneficial in healing peeling skin, as cucumber works as a natural moisturizer. Honey is also an excellent remedy for dry, parched and peeling skin.

As alarming as this probably is for you, people shed skin all the time. For something like this, a natural and very gentle exfoliation once a week, followed by an intense moisturizer should eliminate the problem in about two weeks. It is very important that you stop peeling off the skin! This can cause permanent scarring and infection, that will require a far more involved treatment. As with any skin disorder, you need to be aware of your diet entering plenty of water. With any sort of dry skin or peeling skin, you need to make sure that your consuming enough essential fatty acids in your diet. You get essential fatty acids by consuming butter , no margarine, and taking additional supplements such as flaxseed oil. Increasing your consumption of fish will boost the amount of omega 3 in your diet, which will in turn help the overall health of your skin. Avoid drinking coffee and caffeinated beverages as these are hard on the system and drying to the skin. Alcohol consumption should be avoided at all cost, as this causes damage to your entire body and especially the skin. The skin is your body's largest organ and it often reflects the state of your overall health.
