Advice for slow intestine

Slow digestion is a common problem that affects more people than you might think. Under normal circumstances, it can take between 24 to 72 hours for a meal to be completely digested. If there is a problem at some point of the digestive process or if the entire system is sluggish, the entire process can even take up to four days to complete. In such cases, there is a definite problem and a visit to the doctor is necessary.

There are a number of reasons why you may be suffering from slow digestion. These include:

  • Aging
  • Poor diet consisting of over-processed and fatty foods
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Lack of regular exercise
  • Dehydration
  • Certain medications
  • A condition known as gastroparesis may also cause the slowing down of the digestive process
  • A sluggish or damaged liver
  • Other medical condition such as diabetes, kidney damage or low immunity
  • Pregnancy
If you think any of the above reasons may be causing you slow digestion, speak to your doctor about the possible treatments available.

Slow digestion can also lead to unpleasant symptoms such as stomach pain, cramps, sluggishness, dizziness, nausea and lack of energy. Poor digestion can also reflect on your appearance. You may notice that your hair looks dull and lifeless or that your skin is dry and flaky. If you experience any of these symptoms, consult with your doctor at the earliest to determine the cause of your digestive disorder.

The best treatment for a slow digestive system is a change in diet. Doctors recommend an increase in the intake of fresh fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. Whole grains and foods rich in fiber along with healthy fats such as olive oils and nuts are also important for improving your overall health and energy levels. In addition to dietary changes, you can try the following tips to help speed up the digestive process:

  • Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration and constipation.
  • Exercise regularly to reduce your weight and improve the functioning of your digestive system.
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco and reduce the damage done to your liver.
  • Regulate blood sugar levels and stay away from high-fat sugary snacks and treats as these are very difficult to digest.
  • Certain soluble fibers are available that can be taken to prevent constipation and aid the digestive process.
  • Enemas can help cleanse the colon and keep the digestive tract bacteria free.

It might be clogged up.  Clean the colon either slowly or fast (with OxyPowder colon pills).  Slow can be with the super food chia seeds and set in water, or psyllium.  Ask your doc.
