Dry skin is a very common skin condition which can occur in any area of the body. The skin can become dry entirely or in patches and spots. Dry skin is not a harmful condition, but can be discomforting for the individual as dry skin is more prone to cracking and scaling.
Dry skin can be either mild in which the skin appears slightly dry, feels tight and flakes a bit. In severe cases, the dryness on the skin could be accompanied by intense itching, redness, white patches, cracks and fissures, pain and even bleeding. The skin is naturally elastic and as such can stretch during body movements. But when the skin becomes dry, the elasticity is reduced and as such feels very taut during any kind of movement. Due to this tautness, wrinkles and stretch marks can also develop.
Dry skin can occur due to various factors such as climate, sun exposure, improper functioning of oil glands and poor diet. Dry and cold winter months are most likely to see a tremendous surge in individuals with dry skin. The cold air strips away the natural lubrication of the skin, leaving the skin dry and dull. This may become aggravated when the skin is then exposed to hot air from heaters when indoors. Excessive exposure to the sun can also cause the skin to become dry. The sebaceous or oil glands secrete natural oil that serves to keep the skin moist and lubricated. If the functioning of the oil glands has been hampered in any way, then the production of oil could suffer, thereby resulting in dry skin. Poor dietary habits and inadequate intake of water can also cause skin dryness.
To keep the skin hydrated it is important to consume at least eight glasses of water each day. Eat healthy foods and avoid processed, junk and sugary foods. Consume plenty of foods rich in vitamin A and vitamin C through your diet, as this helps to keep the skin well-hydrated. You can also try out some home remedies for treating dry skin. A face pack made with ripe banana and honey works well to reduce dryness. You can also make a paste of ground poppy seeds and milk and apply to the dry areas. Poppy seeds contain certain natural oils that are very nourishing for the skin. The cream of milk can be rubbed onto the affected areas, as this serves as a natural moisturizer. Massaging the skin with a mixture of olive oil and almond oil every night will also help to keep the skin soft and supple.

In winters, when the humidity is low and the weather cold, a number of people tend to get dry skin. You can also experience dry skin because your oil glands could be producing less oil that required to keep your skin properly hydrated. Dry skin can also be caused by the excessive use of make up, prolonged exposure to the sun and harsh soaps. Another reason for getting dry skin is nutrition deficiencies, especially vitamin E, A & B. Dry skin can also be caused if you have other skin problems like dermatitis & psoriasis. The areas most affected by dryness are the thighs, chest, arms and the side of the abdomen. Dry skin tends to become tight after washing and you also may also develop cracks in your skin.
There are numerous remedies that you can try to relieve dry skin. Almond oil has been known as a good home remedy for dry skin. Massage your face or the dry parts of the body with almond oil every night before sleeping. You can also use olive oil and castor oil to hydrate your skin. A quick and refreshing remedy for cleaning dry skin is to soak your body in lukewarm water for 10 minutes. As a matter of fact, you should make it a point to bathe only with lukewarm water and ensure that you do not bathe for more than 6-7 minutes as this will dry out your skin more. You can also mash ripe bananas and apply it on your face and neck. Leave this for an hour or two and wash it off with lukewarm water.
One of the most effective treatments for dry skin is to massage your skin with grape seed oil. This helps your skin to a large extent. Caffeine and alcohol both should be avoided since they can make the skin drier. You should start applying Aloe Vera gel on the dry skin right after bathing. Aloe Vera has been proven to be a helpful remedy against dry skin. You can use honey and oatmeal for cleaning and moisturizing your face. Mix oatmeal with honey and apply it on your face for a bit and wash it with lukewarm water.
In addition, you can also use a humidifier to add some humidity to your environment. It is also recommended that you start following a healthy diet that includes increased consumption of fruits and vegetables that contain and are rich in vitamin A & E.

Dry Skin Natural Treatment Dry skin should be treated two different ways, from within and from without. For treatment within, you need to take a look at your diet and lifestyle. You need to be drinking plenty of water. The skin is your body's largest organ and it needs water to be properly hydrated. Eating a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables, and protein is also very important. The other often over looked factor in a person's diet is fat. In our quest for weight loss, we often forget that some fats are good and very much needed to maintain our health. Increasing your butter intake slightly should give you the essential fatty acids that you need. You can also take Omega 3 supplements or an essential fatty acid blend. Avoid alcohol consumption as this is very drying and damaging to the skin as well as your other organs. For treatment from the outside, you need to avoid using soaps and lotions that contain alcohol. Putting this on your skin has a very drying effect. Look for soaps and lotions that are all natural and contain things like sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, and cocoa butter. These ingredients nourish the skin as well as moisturize. Shea butter when used pure is also excellent.
