Leg Cramps Health Advice Leg cramps are a sign of a serious calcium and magnesium deficiency or imbalance. The cramping is actually caused by calcium leaching out of your system. Contrary to popular believe, the answer to this is not strictly to take more calcium. The leaching of calcium is caused by a lack of magnesium or an imbalance between calcium and magnesium. Magnesium is crucial to your body's ability to absorb and use calcium. If you do not have enough magnesium and other minerals in your system, then you will have a problem with calcium as well. The best way to get immediate relief from this problem is to start taking a magnesium supplement. You should experience relief within hours. For a while, you should take high doses of magnesium daily. If your stool is softening, then decrease the amount a little bit until things return to normal. Magnesium has a laxative effect on the system. Once your leg cramps have gone away for more than two weeks, start taking a supplement that has both calcium and magnesium, with the ratio being higher for magnesium. This should help keep your system balanced and your leg cramps at bay. A good vitamin supplement will help balance things well.
