Cold Sore Health Advice

Herpes virus results in a cold sore. They are small boils or blisters, seen in the mouth and lips. They are infectious and are transmitted on contact.

Also called fever blister, it is majorly caused by stress. Milk and yoghurt are taken, as they contain lysine, an amino acid essential for preventing   or inhibiting herpes virus. Avoid over exposure to sun, as it instigates cold sores. Lip balms or creams with a high sun protection factor helps. Supplementation of acidophilus tablets is helpful, as they contain lysine. Personal hygiene is important. Avoiding contacts, in the form of kissing is better avoided. Sharing personal belongings, such as towels are not recommended. Reinfection through the previously used toothbrush is seen to occur. Use a new toothbrush. Topical application of ice aids in the initial stages. Caffeinated beverages are avoided. Restrict the intake of acidic and spicy foods. Supplementation of B complex vitamins helps. Placement of tea bag on the affected area is useful and this is attributed to the tannic acid in tea. Arginine containing foods, such as peas, chocolates, oatmeal and peanuts are avoided. Spirit of camphor applied on the cold sore proves beneficial. Cornstarch paste or aloe vera paste also helps.
