The kidneys play an important role in the elimination of waste products from the body through the urine. They also maintain the electrolyte levels in the body. The urine is produced in the kidney, from where it passes into the bladder via the ureter.

From the bladder it is then flushed out of the body through the urethra. The urine contains many minerals which sometimes become crystallized and form small masses. These stones initially are very tiny, but then grow in size. If the kidney stones remain in the kidney, then there is no problem caused. However if they enter the ureter they obstruct the free flow of urine into the bladder. As more and more urine is produced in the kidneys, the pressure behind these stones increases and the kidney begins to swell. This pressure results in pain, but also serves to push the stone further down until it enters the bladder. Once it leaves the ureter, the pain and pressure is relieved.

Hereditary is believed to play a role in the formation of kidney stones. The stones are mainly composed of calcium and other substances. It has been noticed that high calcium levels in the urine are passed on through genetic traits and this could predispose a person to kidney stones. Those individuals who live in areas of hot climates are more prone to kidney stones, especially if their fluid intake is poor. If the susceptibility to kidney stones is already present, then consuming foods that are high in calcium may result in formation of kidney stones. Medications such as diuretics or others which are associated with high calcium levels can also make a person vulnerable to kidney stones.

In order to treat kidney stones through natural remedies, the juice of basil may be mixed with honey and taken daily. Basil is known to strengthen the kidneys and is effective in eliminating stones. Celery is also recommended for those suffering from kidney stones. Kidney stones are also prevented and treated by consuming apple every day. Watermelon consists of the highest water content in fruits and is very helpful in treating kidney stones. You can also soak a couple of figs in water overnight and consume the water the next day for an effective remedy against kidney stones. Tomato juice is another recommended natural remedy against kidney stones and can be taken every morning by adding a pinch of salt and pepper. The juice of fresh radish leaves may also be taken a couple of times a day for relief from kidney stones.

Having kidney stones can be extremely painful. They are a hard mass, which is developed from the crystals that separate the urine within the urinary tact. The majority of the cases of kidney stones are of the calcium oxalate variety. The other types of stones include uric acid stones, cystine and calcium phosphate stones. Most of these kidney stones pass out from the body by themselves without being noticed, but stones that last a long time or create complications such as intense pain in the groin and blood in the urine need be treated with other techniques.

The first step to cure kidney stones is to drink lots of water as it is very necessary for you to urinate as much as possible. You can also drink coconut water to help you pass small stones through the urine. It helps reduce the toxins in our body and helps the body stay cool. Having fruits like watermelon and apples is highly beneficial. Watermelons contain a good amount of potassium salts and have the highest concentration of water among fruits. Watermelons are known to be one of the safest and the best fruits for kidney stones. Grapes too have an excellent diuretic value. Besides the water content, they also have low sodium chloride content. Kidney beans are very good for curing kidney stones. You should consume kidney beans in the following manner. First, remove the beans from the pods, slice the pods and put some of them in hot water. Boil the mixture slowly for around six hours. The liquid should then be strained and allowed to cool completely – you should allow it to cool for at least eight hours. You must ensure that you drink this solution every two hours. For best results, continue drinking this solution regularly for a week. However, ensure that you keep making it every day because the effectiveness of the kidney bean pods wears off in one day once they have been boiled.

To ensure that kidney stones do not recur, you will have to make some changes in your lifestyle. Include a lot of Vitamin A in your diet such as broccoli, beef liver and apricots. Avoid fried and oily food or any kind of food that would cause you acidity. Strictly avoid alcohol and chocolates. Regular exercise and sufficient amount of sleep is a must. After trying various natural methods, if the pain persists you should go visit a doctor.
