(26 Dec 2007)

Pimples are a type of inflammation of the skin that results from clogged hair follicles. They generally develop when whiteheads and blackheads get infected. A spread of pimples is referred to as acne.

Pimples are very common during the teenage years due to the many hormonal changes that take place in the body around the time of puberty. Pimples and acne can also develop in adults. It usually occurs in women during the menstrual cycle as there is a rise in hormonal levels at this time. These hormonal fluctuations stimulate the sebaceous or oil glands into producing an increased amount of oil. The oil that is secreted reaches the surface of the skin through the tiny pores or hair follicles present on the skin. The oil, along with other substances such as dead skin cells, dirt and bacteria forms a plug which clogs the pores. These plugs result in whiteheads which are visible on the skin. In some cases, the top of the plug turns black due to an oxidation process and forms a blackhead. If bacteria infect the pore, it results in infection and inflammation, thereby forming a pimple. Pus is usually formed in a pimple and is a product of the natural defense response of the body. If the pimples rupture and the oil, bacteria and other debris spread to the other areas of the skin, an outbreak of acne takes place.

To prevent the spread of pimples, it is important to follow a proper skin care regimen so that the pores are kept clean of dirt and oil. It is also important that you don’t wash your face too often, as this can strip away all of the natural lubrication of the skin and cause the oil glands to produce excess oil to make up for this. You must also refrain from touching or squeezing the pimples as this will cause the infection to spread and will also leave scars on the skin. Use mild soaps or facial cleansers and do not scrub the skin too much.

Acne and pimples can be easily taken care of by using simple home remedies. Lemon juice is effective in reducing the infection and can be mixed with a teaspoon of cinnamon powder and applied to the pimples. A paste of nutmeg and milk will work well in preventing further inflammation. An orange peel face pack is beneficial in treating pimples. You can make this by taking ground dried orange peels and mixing it with some water. An effective face cleanser can be made with equal parts of rose water and lime juice. Apply to the face and leave it on for half an hour before rinsing.  A paste of grated potato is also helpful in treating pimples and can be applied on a regular basis.

Pimples are a form of acne, and they are one of the most common skin ailments, affecting everyone at some time or the other. They are formed when sweat, dead skin, and oil secretions block the pores of our skin. This eventually leads to the formation of pimples, as well as blackheads (when the oil is exposed to air) and white cysts known as whiteheads.

Pimples are mainly temporary in nature and usually disappear by themselves. Home remedies and even over the counter treatments are usually ineffective at getting rid of pimples once they have formed. However, if you wish, you can try some of these remedies. Applying tomato pulp for an hour on the affected area is said to help clear your skin as well as give a pink glow. Applying fresh juice of papaya is also supposed to be very effective. You have to blend some raw papaya with both the skin and seeds, and apply it on your pimples.

Long term treatments that aim to prevent pimples from forming at all are usually much more successful. You can make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, apply it on your face before sleeping, and wash it off with warm water the next day. Repeating this for two weeks is said to make your pimples disappear. You could also use a mixture of boiled milk and fresh lime juice as a face wash for any kind of acne. Both an orange peel mask or an apple and honey mask are also said to be excellent remedies for treating pimples. In addition, you should always clean your skin with water before applying any kind of home remedy or cream, as this will make the treatments more effective. Also remember that these pastes are to be applied carefully and gently, or you may irritate your skin further, causing the pimples to worsen.

In addition, avoid touching the affected area as this may lead to secondary infections and leave behind permanent marks. Shampoo your hair regularly, as a dirty scalp and dirty hair too is said to contribute to the formation of pimples. To avoid further transfer of bacteria or germs you should also regularly clean your pillowcase, make up brushes, towels, and other tools, which you would use for your face. If you have sensitive or allergic skin, you should also consult your dermatologist before applying any product, or even a natural ingredient, for that matter.
