Multiple sclerosis or MS is an autoimmune condition in which the immune responses of the body attack the central nervous system, consisting of the brain and spinal cord. This results in damage to the myelin sheath, which is the substance that encompasses and protects the nerve cells. As such the signals between the nervous system and the body become disrupted.
MS can cause weakness of the muscles, problems of vision, numbness, pricking or tingling sensations, problems in memory and thinking and disruptions in balance and coordination. This disease is found to be more common in women, and usually develops between twenty and forty years of age. In most cases, the illness is mild, but for some individuals, there may be a loss of speaking, walking or writing abilities. A cure for MS does not exist as yet, but there are treatments to slow down the disease and bring the symptoms under control.
The extent and symptoms of MS vary from individual to individual. Changes in vision are usually the first signs of multiple sclerosis. Inflammation of the optic nerve is commonly experienced and this can lead to complete loss of vision. Blurred vision or haziness is common and the tissues surrounding the eyes may become painful. Double vision is also a symptom of MS in which both eyes begin to move in diverse directions. Due to damage to the cerebellum, which regulates motor coordination and balance, individuals may have problems in maintaining balance while walking or engaging in tasks using the hands. Vertigo and loss of hearing may also occur. Muscle spasms or muscle weakness may occur in the limbs. There is also damage to the nerves that are responsible for the sensations of pain, touch and temperature. As such tingling or pricking sensations may be felt in various parts of the body. The symptoms of MS tend to become worse when the body is exposed to high temperatures such as when taking a hot bath or when performing strenuous physical activity.
Alternative remedies for dealing with multiple sclerosis include massages, acupuncture and homeopathy, all of which have been found to be effective in easing the symptoms for some individuals. Taking warm baths or cold showers during the day are also known to be effective in alleviating the symptoms. One can also try activities such as swimming or other exercises. It is also recommended that individuals affected by MS should take vitamin D and calcium supplements as this is known to slow down the disease. Increasing the intake of omega 3 fatty acids will help to reduce the inflammation caused by MS. This can be obtained from foods such as salmon. Fish oil may also be included in the daily diet. The herbal product bromelain which is obtained from pineapples has been found to be effective in relieving the inflammation and pain arising from MS.

Multiple Sclerosis Health Advice Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system. Autoimmune diseases are those, wherein the defence mechanism of the body attacks the body's components, mistaking them for foreign invaders. The myelin sheath is an insulating layer seen around the nerves. The white blood cells and antibodies attack this proteinaceous layer. Scarring at different layers appears, resulting in loss of muscle coordination. General weakness is seen side by side with effect on sight and sensation. The nerves in the surrounding area of the myelin sheath are inflamed and bruised. It attacks women, in a major fashion. Physicians recommend disease modifying medicines. Therapists help in performance of daily chores, by teaching various exercises. Wheel chairs and canes can be considered for easy motility. Emotional stress and other debilitating factors are relieved by counselling. Plasmapheresis or plasma exchange is a technique, wherein a replacement solution is mixed externally and sent inside. Adequate intake of fruits and vegetables with whole grains are preferred. Low fat foods are recommended. Fish, lean meat, tofu, poultry and dried beans are beneficial. As mobility during multiple sclerosis decreases, it is better to check your food intake, as weight gain is possible.
