Back pain can be quite discomforting and could hamper daily functioning. Resting time is also poorly spent due to the pain. Back pain usually takes a lot of time to heal and hence relief may not come very quickly.
Back pain that is experienced in the upper portion of the back is often accompanied by pain in the chest or lungs. The lungs perform the important function of breathing through the inhalation of oxygen and exhalation of carbon dioxide. Infections or diseases that affect the respiratory tract also affect the lungs. Pneumonia is a condition which causes inflammation of the lungs, and this is usually accompanied by pain in the upper back as well. Back pain along with chest pain may also be experienced in any kind of lung disease. Tuberculosis also affects the lungs and may cause upper back pain as well. If you experience the pain especially when you cough or take a deep breath, then it is most likely that you may have some sort of respiratory infection. Upper back pain that persists and is accompanied by other symptoms such as swelling in the face and neck, weakness and fatigue could be indicative of lung cancer. Since the symptoms you have described are not very specific, it is rather difficult to tell what the condition is. It is advisable to consult a doctor in order to rule out any serious causes.
If the back pain you are facing is due to muscle fatigue or joint problems, then exercise will help to make the muscles stronger. Stretching and strength building exercises help to improve muscle functioning. You can consult a professional in order to determine the right kind of exercises for you. Relaxation techniques also work well in relieving back pain. These involve breathing exercises that help to ease the tension from the back muscles. Individuals facing upper back pain are required to take complete rest due to the pain brought about by this condition. However, gentle exercises and movements serve to quicken recovery.
Hot and cold compresses are effective in relieving pain of the back. Ice packs may be applied to the back for bringing down any swelling or inflammation that may be present. Ice packs may be applied after every alternate hour for best results. Heat treatments also work well to reduce muscle pain. A hot water bottle or heat pad may be applied to the aching muscles. Back massages using essential oils such as eucalyptus oil are very beneficial in easing tense muscles.

Try the following tips to ease pain on the left and right side of your back –
- Maintain a good posture while sitting, standing and even walking. This will solve half of your problem. Avoid slugging in the chair when you sit, as this can also make you feel sleepy (in wrong posture).
- Just don’t stick to bed when you suffer from a bit of back pain. Be physically active this will help improve circulation in the body and the back region (although don’t indulge in vigorous physical activity as it might worsen your back pain). You can consult a specialist and take his advice before starting an exercise regime. Some yogic mudras are also beneficial to ease the back pain.
- Hot compresses works best with sever pain. Just fill a bottle with warm water and use it as compress for your back.
Consult a specialist if the backache is too sever or worsens to know the exact cause for it and the treatment and exercises would follow accordingly.
