High blood pressure treatment

remedy for high blood pressure
(18 Dec 2007)

The force with which the blood in the body pushes against the walls of the blood vessels is known as blood pressure. An increase in this pressure is known as high blood pressure or hypertension. High blood pressure poses the risk of heart disease, kidney problems and abnormalities of the blood vessels.

It is a very common condition that may not produce any symptoms initially, but can lead to serious consequences. Blood pressure is measured in terms of two numbers, the upper number or systolic pressure is the pressure of the blood flow when the heart pumps; and the bottom number or diastolic pressure is the pressure of the blood flow when the heart is at rest. Blood pressure is considered high when it crosses the level of 140/90, in which 140 mm Hg is the systolic pressure and 90 mm Hg is the diastolic pressure.

In some individuals, high blood pressure results from a condition called secondary hypertension which is caused by factors such as chronic kidney conditions, pregnancy, problems of the adrenal gland, intake of birth control pills, alcohol abuse or thyroid abnormalities. In other cases, the cause of hypertension is uncertain and this is termed as primary hypertension. This condition is thought to be triggered by factors such as age, genetic factors, obesity, increased sensitivity to sodium, intake of certain drugs and sedentary lifestyles.

To control the blood pressure it is very important to increase the intake of garlic in the daily diet. Indian gooseberry is also known to be beneficial in regulating blood pressure and a tablespoon of fresh Indian gooseberry juice mixed with honey may be taken every morning. Taking one teaspoonful of fenugreek seeds with water daily also helps in reducing high blood pressure. Eating papaya every day is also believed to be effective in alleviating hypertension. You may also consume a mixture of a teaspoon of honey mixed with a couple of teaspoons of onion juice and one teaspoon of cumin powder. Eating celery has been found to be effective in dilating the muscles that surround the arteries which in turn helps to control blood pressure. Consuming foods that are rich in potassium helps to decrease the blood pressure levels. Such foods include oranges, spinach, bananas and zucchini. Black seed oil is known to contain ingredients that help to lower cholesterol and high blood pressure. A teaspoon of black seed oil may be had directly or mixed in tea and consumed.

High blood pressure is also known as hypertension. It is a medical condition in which the blood pressure is constantly, chronically higher than it should normally be. Hypertension is a serious problem, if untreated, can drastically reduce a person’s life expectancy. High blood pressure seriously increases your risk of suffering a heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure. There are several factors that can lead to high blood pressure, ranging from obesity to vitamin D deficiency. In some cases, the problem may simply be hereditary or age related. Still, it is always advisable to understand the cause of high blood pressure, and if possible control it. In cases where hypertension is the secondary condition, the primary condition needs to be treated first – for example,
sleep apnea, a kidney disorder, or a problem with the adrenal glands. This is something you need to ask your doctor about.

When high blood pressure is itself the primary condition, treatment in most cases mainly consists of lifestyle changes. It is only when these measures do not work that medication is prescribed. Also, in cases where the blood pressure is dangerously high, treatment may begin with medication and the patient may eventually have to rely on only lifestyle measures and home remedies. However, all treatment, whether drug based or lifestyle based, should be discussed with your doctor.

One of the most important changes you need to make is in your diet. Ideally, you should follow the DASH diet -Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. Primarily, this requires cutting down the intake of red meat, salt, and sugar, while increasing intake of fruits and vegetables, white meat (particularly fish), whole grain and nuts. This is of course only a brief overview of the diet – if you are interested, there are several online resources where you can find more details.

In addition to this, it is advisable to abstain from or at least limit, your consumption of alcohol and caffeine. Tobacco should be completely avoided. Exercise is an important part of treatment, but it should always be discussed with your doctor first.

Unplanned and excessively strenuous exercise may be dangerous for you. Ask your doctor to suggest some sort of exercise and find out how much is advisable daily. Finally, avoid stress as far as possible, as it is a great contributor to high blood pressure. Even if you don’t think you suffer from stress, it is advisable to undertake a course in yoga or meditation, or simply practice deep breathing daily.
