Sinusitis refers to an infection of the sinuses which can either be acute or chronic. It is characterized by inflammation of the sinus cavities and the nasal passages. It results in pain and pressure around the nose, eyes and jaws.

There may also be accompanying fever, cough, congestion and thick nasal discharge. The sinuses are present as two pairs of cavities that are filled with air which provide insulation for the skull. They are attached to the area between the nostrils and the nasal pathway. These four pairs of sinus cavities are located in the forehead, at the back of the cheek bones, in the area between the eyes and behind the eyes. Viral infections that affect the upper respiratory tract can lead to acute sinusitis as the lining of the sinuses becomes damaged and inflamed. This causes the lining to swell and cause an obstruction of the nasal passage. This prevents the easy removal of bacteria from the nasal passage, and the bacteria begin to grow and infect the sinus linings. Allergens can also cause irritation of the nasal passages and affect the sinuses. Fungal infections can also affect the sinuses and is seen more commonly in individuals suffering from diabetes, leukemia and AIDS.

The infection can affect different sinuses and this determines the kind of symptoms that develop. If the sinuses behind the eyes are affected, then there is pain in the temples or eye area, fever and nasal congestion. If the sinuses behind the cheek bones are affected, pain and pressure around the cheeks, under the eyes and in the upper teeth is experienced. The cheek bones may also swell and become red. Frontal sinusitis or infection of the sinuses behind the forehead causes intense headaches which become aggravated when the head is moved. When the sinuses behind the eyes are infected, there is pain on the upper portion of the head and behind the eyes. Vision problems may also occur.

Relief from sinusitis can be sought through the inhalation of steam. Adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil to hot water and inhaling the steam arising from it is very beneficial in clearing inflamed sinus cavities and congested nasal passages. The application of cold or hot compresses over the affected areas also helps to alleviate swelling and pain. Intake of onion and garlic is believed to be effective in treating sinus infections. You can also drink a tea made by boiling a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in water. This is known to speed up healing and can be consumed daily. Another effective remedy for sinusitis is to take some lightly heated cumin seeds in a clean thin cloth. Inhale the aroma of the seeds through the cloth for relief. A thick mixture of ground and roasted cumin seeds and honey can also be eaten several times in a day to ease the symptoms of sinusitis.
